Más allá del Tempranillo: Descubre la Garnacha, Mencía, Bobal y Graciano

Beyond Tempranillo: discover Garnacha, Mencía, Bobal and Graciano

Tempranillo is undoubtedly the great ambassador of Spanish red wine. It appears on some of the most recognised labels and has won over palates around the world.

But Spain is not only Tempranillo.

Beyond it, four extraordinary varieties deserve to be discovered: Garnacha, Mencía, Bobal and Graciano. They are grapes with centuries of history, their own territories and personalities unlike anything else.

Why explore beyond Tempranillo?

Great wine lovers know that diversity is one of the greatest treasures of a winery or a region. Spain has an impressive ampelographic heritage, with grape varieties that express very different landscapes, climates and traditions.

Garnacha: the forgotten queen that has returned in style

Garnacha was underestimated for decades and often used as a blending grape to add body and alcohol. Today it is experiencing a spectacular renaissance thanks to old vineyards and producers who understand its delicacy.

It can produce expressive, juicy and silky wines, with red fruit, Mediterranean herbs, spice and a very attractive warmth. It is excellent with rice dishes, grilled vegetables, white meats, roasted poultry and Mediterranean cuisine.

Mencía: Atlantic freshness and floral character

Mencía is closely associated with north-western Spain, especially Bierzo. It is a variety capable of producing fresh, fragrant and elegant red wines, often with notes of red fruit, flowers, herbs and a mineral touch.

It is ideal for those who enjoy reds with personality but without excessive weight. It pairs very well with charcuterie, mushrooms, grilled fish, light meats and dishes with earthy flavours.

Bobal: Mediterranean identity and character

Bobal is one of the great native grapes of south-eastern Spain, especially Utiel-Requena. For many years it was not given the recognition it deserved, but today it is valued for its colour, freshness and authentic Mediterranean profile.

Bobal wines can be fruity, lively and expressive, with notes of black fruit, herbs and a pleasant rustic character. They pair beautifully with grilled meats, stews, rice dishes and cured cheeses.

Graciano: intensity, freshness and ageing potential

Graciano has traditionally been used in Rioja blends to add colour, acidity, aroma and ageing capacity. When made with care, it becomes a unique variety in its own right.

It produces wines with intense colour, vibrant freshness, black fruit, spice and firm but elegant tannins. Its natural acidity gives it extraordinary potential to evolve over time.

A richer way to understand Spanish red wine

Tempranillo will always be essential, but Garnacha, Mencía, Bobal and Graciano open the door to a broader and more exciting vision of Spanish wine. Each glass tells a different story about the place it comes from.
